Complexity and the project

We proposed to our health board that we should take a bold step and be allowed to adopt a complexity science approach to healthcare associated infection. Complexity science looks at the simple rules that govern complex adaptive systems and seeks to identify parallels that can be applied to human systems.

This page takes you through four videos, which explain how our project relates to treating the healthcare as a complex adaptive system. We suggest you view them in the order presented.

One of the classic examples of a complexity in nature is the murmuration of starlings. Experts seem to agree that each starling only follows three simple rules to create the sky dance.

Mike Simmons explains the projects journey and his understanding of how complexity science features.

We therefore ask you to consider “How wolves change rivers,” to provide further insight into how a complex adaptive system behaves as a change is introduced into a system

Mike continues the complexity journey by explaining what happened as a result of narrative reporting in our health board and then what might happen if we adopt and spread the innovation to the rest of Wales.
